This course offers an introduction to the art of DJing, providing students with the fundamental skills and knowledge needed to start a career in the world of music mixing and performance. Course overview

This course offers prospective practicing DJs with an overview of the following knowledge and skill elements:

  • An introduction to the industry-standard DJ equipment, controllers, mixers and software.
  • The fundamentals of beatmatching and transitioning between tracks.
  • The course will engage the prospective DJ into music selection and curation, and also to understand crowd dynamics and music genres.
  • Create cohesive playlists.
  • Basic music theory is covered to enhance mixing skills, focusing on musical keys, harmonics and structure.
  • Performance techniques including stage presence, reading a crowd and crafting memorable DJ sets.
  • Basic recording and post-production editing techniques for producing and refining DJ mixes.

 

The delegate will get the opportunity to showcase and perform a 30-minute DJ set with the skills acquired through the course. The facilitator (practising professional) will provide the delegate with detailed feedback and evaluate the technical skills, music selection and crowd engagement of the delegate.

  • Learn the essential skill of beatmatching to ensure smooth transitions between tracks.
  • Introduction to BPM and tempo.
  • Techniques for manual beatmatching using pitch controls and jog wheels.

 

Session 3: Mixing Techniques and Transitions

Objective 3: Develop skills for transitioning between tracks.

Objective 4: Engage with crowd dynamics and the importance of music genres.

  • Master basic mixing techniques for creating transitions.
  • Crossfading, EQ adjustments and blending tracks.
  • Practice transitioning between different music genres.

Session 7: Recording and Editing DJ Mixes
