This short learning programme will challenge learners to turn hobbies, interests or aspects of life into a creative and inspirational business opportunity. Explore industries that cover similar topics, identify salient features of how content is packaged and establish where the gaps are. As a content creator, acquire the skills to create, market and manage mini-doccies, vlogs and tutorials as a portfolio with specific mobile device use.

- Document and format content to deliver a product or service.
- Learn about the film form as a documentary and applied in a business context.
- Identify content distribution outlets or social media platforms to market and manage the product or service.
- Understand the basic and advanced rules of composition, framing, lighting, camera movement, finding “focus” and transitions.
- Evaluate and apply how to compile shot lists, navigate mobile video apps, and employ effective editing techniques.
Course outlines
WEEK 1
Session 1 – Turn a hobby, interest or skill into a service or product
- How to apply your hobbies, interests or skills to:

- Educate and impart a skill that inspires other
- Grow a body of research on a subject of interest
- Create awareness
Session 2 – Capture high-quality content with your mobile device
- Understand the basic rules of composition, framing and lighting when capturing content for the vertical aspect ratio.
- Understand settings and exposure.
WEEK 2
Session 1 – Formats of documenting content (example: mini-doccies/vlogs, tutorials)
- Who is creating content on the chosen subject of interest?
- How are these created? For example: avenues/platforms, formats/strategies, language, length and resources/equipment the market employ.
Session 2 – Apply movement and focus
- Evaluate and apply different techniques to create dynamic footage. On-camera movement and finding “focus”.
- Create transitions through movement.
WEEK 3
Session 1 – Market research
- What content would you like to create, and what is its business potential?
- Who are the key industry players with whom to collaborate?
- What strategies do they employ to package and distribute their content?
- What are the gaps/how do you hope to enliven the industry?
*This session may include an engagement with an industry expert.
Session 2 – Plan, record and edit content for events and vlogs
- Planning shot lists.
- Evaluate different video editing apps for the mobile.
- Evaluate simple but effective editing techniques.
WEEK 4
Session 1 – Application: Pitch an idea and put it to test
- Pitch an idea for the content.
*This includes a description of what the channel/programme will specialise in.
- Produce a script for a mini doccie/vlog or tutorial.
- Identify the equipment needed to produce the content and book equipment.
- Identify and approach crew members to work with.
- Shoot and edit the content.
- Create a platform where the content will be disseminated.
